About 36 kilometres west of the City of Hastings we are privileged to offer for sale on behalf of the owners ‘Mangawhare’, one of Hawke’s Bay’s outstanding and notable early settler station homesteads. The station was originally established in 1861 and in the 1870’s encompassed 68,500 acres. The homestead was originally constructed in 1877 as a single storey residence but was expanded with a second storey in 1907 and now has a floor area of 434 square metres in total. The story of Mangawhare Station, the homestead and the people and families who lived and farmed there are well documented in two books; West of the Annie (By the RD9 Historical Committee ISBN 0-473-08951-3) and Early Stations of Hawke’s Bay (Miriam Macgregor (ISBN 0 589 00440 9).

The homestead is approached from a long tree lined driveway to its site on a small rise obviously chosen for the remarkable outlook north over the surrounding countryside, an outlook which remains unspoiled to the present day. The many specimen trees, English Oaks, Elms and many others planted lining the drive and around the homestead over more than 130 years combine with the site to create an outstandingly beautiful setting for this beautiful old home. The house has six bedrooms and one bathroom upstairs, a downstairs bathroom, kitchen, family room, a large formal living room and a study or library.

A special feature of the home is the extensive, polished native timber panelling and woodwork throughout, nowhere more outstanding than in the large reception hallway with its remarkable staircase and balustrade to the upper level, the beautiful panelled formal living room and the equally remarkable woodwork and panelling in the study or library. The home has been largely modernised over recent years with re-roofing, full re-piling, modern plaster wall linings (although some smaller areas of original scrim lining remain upstairs), modern wiring and full reconstruction of the front verandah. There is considerable scope for further renovation and modernisation, however the opportunity to work on a home as beautiful and remarkably original as is Mangawhare, must be considered both unique and potentially hugely rewarding.

Mangawhare is offered for sale subject to survey and issue of a new title on an area of between 1.5 to 2.5 hectares. Boundaries may be adjusted by negotiation between vendor and buyer to suit the particular needs of the buyer. The area purchased may optionally include a range of farm outbuildings adjacent to the homestead. With its long tree lined driveway and surrounding English Oak, Elm and other magnificent specimen trees, fertile soils and ideal growing climate, the property would be ideal for a gardening enthusiast or even development of a garden park for tourism or other tourist related activities.

Mangawhare is located on Glenross Road near its junction with Taihape Road, (a high quality rural highway connecting Hawke’s Bay with State Highway 2 on New Zealand’s Central Plateau). It is 40 minutes easy driving to Hastings City. The Taihape Road is a popular route for Hawke’s Bay snow ski enthusiasts travelling to the Tongariro National Park ski fields. There are outstanding and accessible trout fishing rivers nearby (for examples the Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri Rivers) as well as extensive and accessible deer hunting and tramping within easy reach of the property.

At Sherenden, a small rural settlement about 12 kilometres distant on the Taihape Road, the Sherenden and districts primary school (decile 10) offers a high standard primary education for years 1 to 8 (Form 2). Sherenden is typical of a number of high achieving Hawke’s Bay rural primary schools offering an excellent primary education in a quality environment not often matched in larger urban schools. There is a school bus available at the gate together with mail and newspaper delivery.

Opportunities to acquire a historic homestead of this quality and character are extremely rare. The property has wonderful potential for many uses, is realistically priced and presents an outstanding opportunity for the right person.
