For many decades the Hawaiian agricultural land was best known for its sugar plantations, but the sugar industry has dropped off in the last 30 years, leaving large tracts of agricultural land available for livestock forage.
In January of 2005, Hawaii received almost $2,000,000 in federal funs to protect Hawaii farm and ranch land using conservation easements. Such easements prevent the conversion of farm and ranch land to non-ag uses.
The history of ranching in Hawaii is fascinating. It begins in 1793 when a British sea captain landed on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, and gifted King Kamehameha with five cows. Ten years later, an American sea captain visited the Big Island and gave the king a pregnant mare. For the next few decades horses and cattle were allowed to roam freely on the island and their herds multiplied. Gradually the herds became large and unmanageable. In 1832, the Hawaiian King sent an emissary to California and brought back some of the vaqueros to teach the Hawaiians how to break and ride horses and work the cattle. As a result, Hawaiian horsemanship is steeped in the Spanish vaquero tradition.
As the whaling industry grew in Hawaii throughout the nineteenth century, the demand for beef grew as well, and ranching spread rapidly from the Big Island to other Islands as well. Ranching in Hawaii continues to this day. In fact, the largest cattle ranch in the United States is not in Texas; it's the 225,000 acre Parker ranch located on the Big Island of Hawaii! The Big Island has some where between 450 to 500 cattle ranches, more than any of the other islands.
Typically, Hawaiian beef cattle are shipped to the mainland for finishing; however, there’s a movement to finish cows in Hawaii, and by natural means and grass-fed programs, so that Hawaii’s demand for beef can be met by its own cattle. A company called Maui Cattle Co. with ranch holdings on Maui and Kaui has a goal that none of their cattle leave the island, and they finish their cattle on pineapple silage and forages – a practical approach, especially with rising fuel costs.
